Booklet discipline

  • 10-markers ≈ 150 words / ~2 pages; 15-markers ≈ 250 words / ~3 pages — space is pre-allocated.
  • Write only in blue or black ballpoint; highlighters and gel pens are typically disallowed.
  • Do not write in side margins or leave religious / identifying marks — that can attract deductions.
  • Supplementary sheets are generally not provided; plan length to the printed pages.

Sectional floor: ≥ 25 marks in each of the seven merit papers, or the written total is not ranked.

FAQs

Mains questions

What is the total Mains marks structure?

Nine papers: Papers A & B are qualifying languages (300 each, 25% bar). Seven merit papers × 250 = 1,750. Interview adds 275 → 2,025 grand total.

What is the 10% sectional rule?

You need at least 25/250 in each of the seven merit papers. Below that in any one paper, the aggregate is not ranked.

What are QCAB basics?

Question-cum-answer booklets with fixed pages per question. Blue/black ballpoint only; avoid margins and identifying marks; no extra sheets in normal conditions.

How heavy is the optional?

500 of 1,750 written marks (~28.5%). Strong optional scores (often 280–320 for top ranks) are a common differentiator.

How should 10-mark vs 15-mark answers differ?

10-marker (~150 words): short intro, two body heads, micro diagram, short close. 15-marker (~250 words): richer intro, three dimensions + citations, fuller way-forward.

What is GS-IV Section A vs B?

Section A is theory / values / EI (~130 marks). Section B is case studies (~120 marks) needing stakeholder mapping and balanced decisions.
